Medi-Evil Nutrition: Holland & Barrett; Medi-evil Nutrition has been supplying Holland & Barrett with their products for a number of years. It all started back in 2013 when the owner of the Holland & Barrett franchise in Gibraltar wanted to stock the new Medi-Evil Excalibur fat burner. We had to send a sample to the H&B headquarters in Nuneaton.
Head Office were so excited to see so much innovation in a single product that they asked our sales director to go and see them. They were impressed with the corked medieval-style potion bottle and the silkscreened/gold-leafed box. They said we were onto something special before they even looked at Excalibur’s formulation.
Our formula was impressive fitting 915mg into a single capsule. The capsules were made in the USA to our specification, a OOO size capsule (the biggest possible) and man-made rather than from Gelatin so they were suited to Vegans etc. They were produced at a much higher cost as Medi-Evil Nutrition wanted a clean product with no nasty filling or packing agents such as magnesium stearate or titanium dioxide. This was groundbreaking and Holland and Barrett not only approved our product for sale in the Gibraltar store but they took it on in their main stores in the UK as well as online.
Holland & Barrett are Britain’s biggest and most trusted vitamin and supplements retailer, so I thought it would write a few words about their history.
Holland & Barrett was formed in 1870 by two friends Alfred Slapps Barrett and Major William Holland. They bought a grocery store in Bishops Stortford, and they initially specialised in groceries and clothes.
They later developed their business into two shops, a grocery store, and a clothing store. Then around 1900 they opened another store in Epsom High Street. In the 1920s, Alfred Button & Sons bought the business from them and kept the name Holland & Barrett as it was held in high regard.
Holland & Barrett has changed hands many times over the past 100 years. It was 1970 when Booker acquired Holland & Barrett, they also acquired Heath & Heather shops which they renamed Holland & Barrett after a few years. Lloyds Pharmacy bought Holland and Barrett in 1992, followed by an American company Called Natures Bounty (NBTY). NBTY was then bought by another American private equity firm The Carlyle Group in 2010.
Holland & Barrett became a household name selling vitamins and supplements, and by 2016 had a store in every major town and city with stores totaling more than 1000. In 2017 negotiations began once more, and on 26th of June came an announcement that Holland & Barrett had been sold for 1.8 billion pounds to L1 Retail which is controlled by the Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman.
There are now a total of 1,368 Holland & Barrett stores worldwide, with a presence in 16 countries including Belgium, Sweden, Holland and the Republic of Ireland. The majority of their portfolio is based in the UK with 715 owned stores.
